Alex McClellan, originally from Montreal, Quebec, played hockey for Westhill High School and the Montreal Junior Canadians before coming to the University of Michigan in the fall of 1950. He played defense from 1950-1951 through 1952-1953 under Coach Vic Heyliger.
He scored eleven goals and thirty-eight assists in seventy-seven career games. During his collegiate career, Michigan’s record was 61-15-1. Nicknamed “Herky”, he played in every game for three years. He also played in three NCAA Championships, with Michigan winning all of them in 1951, 1952, and 1953. Alex McClellan was selected as an All-American in 1953. He was also selected to the First Team of the 1953 NCAA Championships. His teammates voted him Most Valuable Player in 1953. Alex McClellan graduated from the University of Michigan School of Business Administration.
