Gil Burford hails from Windsor, Ontario, having played for the Windsor Spitfires before enrolling at the University of Michigan. Playing left wing for three years, 1949-1950 to 1951-1952, under Coach Vic Heyliger, Gil was always a high goal scorer each year. As captain during his senior year in 1951, his proudest moment was winning the NCAA Championship at Colorado Springs. He was an All-American selection in 1951 and graduated from the School of Business Administration.
