John Blum is from Detroit, Michigan and played hockey for Notre Dame High School in Harper Woods, Michigan before enrolling at the University of Michigan. He played defense from 1978-1981 under Coaches Dan Farrell and John Giordano.
He scored nineteen goals and had ninety-five assists for 114 career points which puts him in sixth place overall for scoring by a Michigan defenseman. His ninety-five assists have him tied for twenty-first place all-time in scoring at Michigan. He was an Alternate Captain in 1981. He won the Most Improved Player award in 1979, was selected to the 1980 All-Great Lakes Invitational Tournament team, and was Co-Most Valuable Player in 1981. He was also selected to the Denver Post All-WCHA team in 1981.
John Blum graduated from the University of Michigan in 1981, after which time he played in the National Hockey League for the Edmonton Oilers, Boston Bruins, Washington Capitals, and Detroit Red Wings. After retiring, he served as a minor league assistant coach for a number of teams. He is now involved in youth hockey in Florida.
